For Willi Smith’s 1984 City Island collection, he commissioned Nam June Paik to produce a runway installation, juxtaposing Paik’s video work with WilliWear’s everyday basics.

Smith’s close relationship with the downtown arts scene, and the interdisciplinary runway show spectacles that came out of it set the precedent for contemporary brands like Eckhaus Latta, Balenciaga, etc.
