David Hammons is one of the all-time greats. Unbeatable.
In 1980, Franklin Furnace Gallery launched FLUE, a magazine on the arts which also featured ‘artist pages’ in which featured artists could do whatever they wanted with.
This issue is especially notable as it contains documentation of ‘Pissed Off’, a performance by David Hammons in which he pisses on T.W.U, a monumental public Richard Serra sculpture and then has an encounter with a police officer. The performance was documented by Dawoud Bey.
Later that year, Hammons would toss 25 pairs of shoes over the sculpture to hang - recalling the sight of sneakers dangling from power lines.
This issue also contains artist pages from Agnes Denes, Ana Mendieta, and cover art by Louise Lawler.
