Chanterelle bill by Merce Cunningham

Chanterelle bill by Merce Cunningham

$275.00

Chanterelle opened in Soho in 1979 and brought fine dining to downtown New York.

Over the course of its 3 decades serving, the restaurant had several artists design its menu covers, often in exchange for food and drink. These artists included Robert Ruschenberg, Cy Twombly, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Prince, Merce Cunningham, John Cage, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Longo, Julian Schnabel, and on, and on, and on.

The restaurant changed out the menu design about every 6 months and mosts were offset lithograph printed here in New York. Only about 800 copies were printed of each design. At the end of the meal, diners had the option to purchase the menu and bill.

This cover was designed by Merce Cunningham in 1982 and this particular example was from a dinner on February 24, 1983.

An incredible piece of the New York downtown art scene. Suitable for framing.
